I was very pleased with Jil Sander’s men’s collection for aw09. There was variety in silhouettes, textures and looks. This was a collection that catered to every man. Everyone from the dark minimalist, to the bold risk-taker. I liked how he also managed to slip in a round two of color-blocking, but a different variation of it, almost as if he airbrushed the colors onto the garment. Needless to say, very different from what he did in his last collection (which I wasn’t too thrilled with). This collection offered the Jil Sander man more options, and didn’t pigeon-hold him to just one look or aesthetic. I felt he cleverly covered a spectrum of silhouettes ranging from beautifully tailored suits, that contour the body, to more geometric, boxy garments.
I’d date a jil sander man.
side note: I realize that I am inspired by menswear more and more. I sometimes feel that creating a garment for a man involves more of a thought process. The measurements, in seams, hems, they all have to be just right. Fit is key. If it doesn’t fit in the shoulders or something, it throws the whole look off. Whereas in women’s wear, you are either a 2, 4, 6 and that’s it. Women rarely pay attention to fit or tailoring, and only care about how it looks. I also feel that we rarely care about quality. One thing that I’ve learned while working at ODIN, is fit and quality are what really matters.
personally, I think it would be interesting if we deviated from women’s wear and menswear and embraced a sex-less, androgynous fashion.
ok, i’m done ranting.
